TMJ (Temporo-Mandibular Joint)

The most frequent cause of TMJ problems is an imbalanced bite. Other factors can also play a role in the development of problems, such as bruxism (grinding the teeth),
Stress / tension, trauma / injuries, occlusal (bite) problems, arthritis, etc. Symptoms of TMJ syndrome include the following:

Jaws that "get stuck", "lock", or go out".
Clicking or popping noise when one opens or closes the mouth.
Pain when yawning, chewing, or opening the mouth widely.
Pain in or around the ear. This pain often spreads to the face.
Certain types of headaches or neck aches.
Difficulty in opening one's mouth.
Tenderness of the jaw muscles.

The temporomandibular joint is one of the most complex joints in the body. The healthy TMJ opens and closes like a hinge but also allows the lower jaw to slide forward. There are two TMJ’s, located right in front of each ear. The temporomandibular joint is affected by physical and emotional stress. What’s more, the joint is constantly affected by the mechanics of your bite and your jaw movements. Stress, fatigue, jaw muscle tension, and changes in your bite can all affect the TMJ. Many people have problems with TMD. These problems with the TMJ are collectively called TMD—Temporomandibular Disorder.
