Wisdom Tooth Extraction Calgary

Your Downtown Calgary Choice for Wisdom Teeth Extraction!

What are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the third and last permanent molars to develop in the back upper and lower corners of the mouth, usually between the ages of 17-25. Some people never develop wisdom teeth at all. For some lucky people, wisdom teeth erupt normally and cause no problems at all. For many others, however, wisdom teeth cause problems and need to be removed. Canterra Dental is pleased to offer wisdom teeth extraction! This common surgical procedure removes one or more wisdom teeth, easing problems and helping to avoid future problems down the road.

How do I know if my wisdom teeth need to be removed?

Your dentist will examine you and take x-rays to determine whether you need to have your wisdom teeth removed, usually between the ages of 17-25. If there is sufficient space in your mouth and the wisdom teeth are able to erupt and function normally, they can be left alone. Likewise, if the wisdom teeth remain buried in the bone and are unlikely to erupt, or if they never develop at all, you may not need them removed. However, often patients are not so lucky, and wisdom teeth begin causing problems. If there is not enough room in the mouth to accommodate them, and they cannot erupt properly, this can result in cavities, pain, crowded teeth, or even gum infections. Sometimes wisdom teeth can develop diagonally and horizontally, which is referred to as Impacted Wisdom Teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth, the most common reason for removal, can cause major problems in your mouth including pain, swelling, discomfort, and even illness. Early removal of wisdom teeth can help avoid future problems and potential costly surgical procedures down the road.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

An impacted wisdom tooth occurs when there is not enough room for the wisdom tooth to emerge or develop normally. This results in the tooth remaining fully submerged within the gum and bone. Impacted wisdom teeth are usually removed because either they are causing problems like pain, damage to other teeth, infection, or other dental problems, or because of problems that could come up later on if they remain in the mouth. Oftentimes, damage caused by wisdom teeth is not visible on the surface, and so x-rays of the mouth are necessary to see what is going on underneath the gum, and to determine what type of extraction is required.

Reasons for Wisdom Tooth Removal

  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Crowding
  • Wisdom teeth are growing diagonally or horizontally, which can cause many issues including infection of surrounding tissues and damage to the adjacent second molar.
  • Gum infection due to food being trapped
  • Pain from sinuses or lower jaw
  • Cavities on wisdom teeth, which cannot be repaired
  • Orthodontic treatment is required and removal is necessary to allow space to align teeth properly

If left untreated, wisdom teeth that are not growing properly can cause many problems, including infections, decay, damage to adjacent teeth, crowding, and cysts.
