Prosthodontics (Crowns, Bridges, Dentures)

| Prosthodontics are called for where the teeth are broken down or missing, causing problems in both the bite and appearance of the mouth. The most common solutions to these problems are crown, bridge work and/or dentures. Restoration is usually so successful that others cannot discern the real teeth from the restoration. Crown and bridge treatment is a long-term method of replacing a missing tooth or teeth. In dentistry - crowns and bridges refers to the restoration of natural teeth that have been damaged, decayed or lost. A crown can be made to restore an individual tooth damaged by decay or fracture back to it's original form and function, while a bridge is used to replace one or more missting teeth. Crowns become necessary when there is insufficient tooth structure to support a filling. Teeth that are severely broken down from decay or fracture can be fully restored to proper appearance and function with a crown restoration. Crowns cover the tooth completely, fitting just at the gumline and protecting the remaining tooth. A Bridge is a single appliance that is generally attached to two teeth on each side of the space where a tooth is missing. An artificial tooth attached in the middle of the bridge fills in the gap where the missing tooth was. The teeth on either side of the gap are prepared for crowns (see crowns) and a highly accurate impression or mold is made of the prepared area. This mold is used to create a gold or porcelain (tooth colored) bridge in our laboratory. The bridge is then cemented onto the prepared surface of the teeth, effectively creating the appearance of a "new" tooth. Dentures - If many of your teeth are missing, loose or painful, you may be past the point of saving them. The cause of these conditions is usually advanced periodontal disease. Replacing your teeth with dentures may be the best way to eliminate the infection and return your mouth to good health. A tooth or teeth can be replaced with either a fixed or a removable prosthesis. A denture is a removable replacement for a missing tooth or teeth. Complete dentures replace all teeth while partial dentures replace one to several teeth. |
